Arrowtown at Your Own Pace

Arrowtown’s compact size (the historic village covers approximately 500 metres end to end), its well-marked trail network, and its clearly signposted heritage sites make it one of the most rewarding self-guided destinations in the South Island. You do not need a tour to experience Arrowtown’s highlights — a combination of the village heritage walk, the Arrow River trail, and a drive or ride to the Gibbston wineries can fill a satisfying day without a guide.

Self-Guided Routes

The Arrowtown Heritage Walk — a marked walking route through the village’s gold rush-era buildings (Buckingham Street’s stone and timber shops, the Lakes District Museum, the old gaol, the post office, and the Chinese Settlement — a restored village of stone huts where Chinese gold miners lived in the 1860s–1880s). The walk takes approximately 45–90 minutes and is covered by interpretation panels at each significant building.

The Arrow River Trail — the sealed cycling and walking path along the river, through the gorge, across suspension bridges, and past the gold mining relics. Self-guided with a map from the bike hire shop or the information centre. Allow 2–4 hours for the return walk or 1.5–2.5 hours by bike.

Gold panning in the Arrow River — you can pan for gold in the Arrow River using a simple gold pan (available for hire or purchase in the village). The river still contains fine gold, and the technique (scooping gravel, swirling to separate the heavy gold particles from the lighter material) is the same method used by miners in the 1860s. Finding colour (visible gold flakes) is common — finding a nugget is unlikely but not impossible.

The Gibbston Valley by car — self-drive to the cellar doors along the Kawarau Gorge road (SH6). The wineries are well-signposted, the cellar doors welcome walk-in visitors, and the designated non-drinking driver manages the road. Allow a half day for 2–3 wineries with tastings and a platter lunch.
